Animating The Very First Noel

Filed under:

I don't think I have the patience to be an animator. In this little blurb about the animation of The Very First Noel, it talks a little about the project that required 17 minutes of animation be completed in 10 weeks. Reel FX did the production with each animator creating about 8-10 seconds per week. The part I found humorous was after they realized creating new background characters was going to take up too much time, the adopted a Mr. Potato Head approach: grab body parts from other characters to quickly create a new character. The story is narrated by Andy Griffith and is available now on DVD.

Green.tv: environmental Internet TV channel

Green-tv logoGreen.tv is an environmental internet video channel. Web TV Wire recently caught up with Ade Thomas, the director of green.tv. Ade stated that green.tv was built in-house by largeblue, which is his own video and digital media company and also by a company called ESP who Green.tv knew prior to building the website. Ade Thomas has a history of working with digital video production, especially with environmental content.

Interestingly Green.tv has a completely unique video player that is able to detect the best plugin to use based on what the user has installed on their PC. It can choose from WMP, flash and Quicktime, with flash appearing to take dominance over the others.

Interview solutions, greenscreen it

If you shoot lots of interviews you know that each one comes with its own set of challenges. If you travel to the subjects location you have to worry about how you will present the interviewers questions, getting shots of both parties, lighting, surroundings, audio, etc. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's a nightmare. Well one solution might be to do all your interviews with greenscreens then make them look however you want in post. In this article that's just what they end up doing. Heck, the interviewer isn't even required to be on location because they setup iChat so he can ask the questions while the subject answers into the camera. The interviewers part is all shot at another time and tweaked in post. The article is interesting and with everyone so busy these days it's certainly hard to get everyone in the same room at the same time. This is definitely something to keep in your hat to pull out when you need it.

The making of Kenya

Here's a great story about the making of the documentary film Kenya. Production started in 2003 and the film was first screened earlier this year. The story discusses how they approached the filming in Kenya, the decision to shoot HDV (keep in mind shooting took place in 2003), and the massive undertaking of logging over 80 hours of footage and 110 hours of audio. There's also a good lesson about the importance of good audio. It's a great read and a testimony to the hard work that goes into creating a documentary.

Joe Barbera and computer-assisted animation at Hanna-Barbera

Hannah BarberaJoe Barbera of the famous Hanna-Barbera cartoons died of natural causes on Monday at the age of 95. Hanna-Barbera cartoons were a huge influence on the cartoon industry and the Hanna-Barbera company was and still is considered to be animated superstars.

Hanna-Barbera was one of the pioneers of computer assisted animation when the company started using computer animation before Pixar or Disney. In fact, Disney rejected the idea of using computer animation from computer graphics researcher Marc Levoy back in the late 70s / early 80s. Whereas Disney rejected the idea, Hanna-Barbera embraced it. The animation technology was successful in reducing labor costs which helped save the company. The computer animation technology was used until 1996.
