Filed under: Hardware, Gear, DVD LG's first hybrid Blu-Ray and HD DVD player, the BH100 is closer to reality with a recent introduction of the hardware. Consumers should no longer have to settle exclusively on either format when the player launches for $1,199 sometime during the first quarter of this year. The player features 1080p HDMI and component video output, 5.1 analog audio outputs, coaxial and digital optical outputs and an Ethernet connection. Expect more details soon.

Filed under: Movies Popular Mechanics offers up some insight into the history of special effects with their list of the top ten film effects in cinema history. A somewhat subjective venture, but a nevertheless interesting and insightful one, the list does a pretty good job of exploring some specific special effects technologies that have come into being, and helped shaped the advancement of visual effects in future films. With the constant improvement of technology, there have been many landmarks over the past few decades. Worthwhile read.

They finished up the acquisition of InterVideo, completed an update to Ulead VideoStudio 10 which earned Vista certification and released an update to InterVideo DVD Copy 5 to support Tivo, Zune and iPod. What's next? Today they announced support for AVCHD in their InterVideo WinDVD 8 playback software. Future product releases of InterVideo and Ulead video and DVD products will also support AVCHD. Filed under: Cameras Sony's got a new group of DVD camcorders coming up this year, with four new models set the replace their current lineup. The DCR-DVD108, DVD308, DVD408, and DVD508 cover the range from lightweight to the more robust, with all models offering dual-layer DVD support, which is the major selling point here. Other than that, there's not much other than some slight performance and feature boosts. The DVD108 and DVD308 should hit in February, with the last two coming to stores in March.
