Setting up and remembering to use a backup system is a huge hassle. Fortunately, 2007 may turn out to be "The Year of the Backup." Both Microsoft and Apple Computer have built automated backup software into the latest versions of their operating systems; both make their debuts this year. At the same time, an option that was once complex, limited and expensive is suddenly becoming effortless, capacious and even free: online backups, where your files are shuttled off to the Internet for safekeeping.

Secretly, I'd always wanted an iPod -- despite years of putting up an anti-iPod front. When my older daughter wanted one, I mounted a futile resistance. When I'd see people at the gym or Safeway or walking down the street, oblivious to everyone and everything except the music pouring out of those telltale white ear buds, I'd scoff at the isolationism. So when my wife gave me an iPod shuffle, you know what I did, don't you? Yes, I stood in virtual line with the throng of new iPodites who temporarily brought down Apple's online store.

A Taiwan consumer electronics company said Friday that it intends to seek US$100 million in damages from Apple Computer after winning a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Apple over its MP3 digital music players. Luxpro decided on the suit after Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission ruled that Luxpro has not copied Apple's design in launching three MP3 players, according to a Luxpro statement. Apple claimed that the three MP3 players' cases and round control buttons were similar to those of Apple's iPod.

2006 established fairly standard growth patterns for Web browsers: up for Safari and Firefox, down for Internet Explorer. The downward trend took Internet Explorer to its lowest market share percentage for the year at 79.64 percent, though Microsoft could curb the trend if Windows Vista sells well. Internet Explorer's loss turned into gains for Safari and Firefox. Safari ended the year at 4.24 percent, and Firefox came in at 14 percent after starting 2006 with 9.5 percent of the market.
