Ending months of furious speculation and breathless anticipation from devotees, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled two products the company hopes can extend his company's iPod success streak during 2007 -- an iPhone mobile device and a high-definition set top box. The iPhone, which combines the iPod digital music player with an Apple-designed mobile phone, has been rumored to be in the works for more than a year. The device features touch-screen functionality, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth connectivity and Web-surfing features.

Appearing to hedge its search bets, electronics giant Samsung on Monday announced partnerships with competing search engines Google and Yahoo. Samsung will preload Yahoo services, including a content personalization feature called Yahoo Go for Mobile 2.0, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger, and Yahoo oneSearch on its mobile phones beginning in the first half of 2007. Samsung was smart to include both search services, said analyst Greg Sterling, because each has unique strengths.

With Apple Computer poised to invade its turf, Motorola on Monday introduced a new music phone and software aimed at making it easier to buy music online. Apple is expected to unveil a device that mates the mobile phone with its iPod music player, an announcement that could come Tuesday at the company's annual Macworld show in San Francisco. Motorola Chief Executive Edward Zander presented a package of new music phone initiatives Monday, as well as a partnership with Yahoo, during a keynote address at the 2007 International Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

Shares of Apple Computer climbed in the premarket session Tuesday before the opening of the Macworld show, where the company is expected to unveil products, among which is -- possibly -- an Apple-branded cellular phone. Shares added 88 US cents to $86.36 in premarket electronic trading after closing at $85.47 Monday on the Nasdaq. Apple's Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs is expected to announce at least one new product during his keynote address at the trade show in San Francisco.
