Will Apple's iPhone Measure Up to the Hype?

Apple's new iPhone will be a challenge both for the company and for the people who use it. It could be a revolutionary device -- if all works as planned. I don't doubt Apple's claims. My understanding is based on media reports and demos shown on Apple's Web site. After working with several brands of mobile phones over the years, I've found that things aren't always as they seem. There's a lot this device is advertised as being able to do: Web browsing, e-mail, text messaging, photos and more.

The good news, according to a new recording industry report, is that record labels around the world registered $2 billion in digital sales last year -- either through music online or mobile phones -- nearly doubling the market in the previous year. The bad news is that these sales have not totally compensated the industry for its lost audio CD revenues, which started to decline around five years ago. The report was released in London by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, an umbrella organization for national groups and affiliated industry associations.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, Newton Peripherals debuted the world's smallest USB Bluetooth dongle, ideal for owners of older iBook and PowerBook models. The MoGo Dapter is smaller than a thumbnail, making it discreet and portable while virtually eliminating any chance of it being knocked out or causing damage to the USB port. The MoGo Dapter will be available in the second quarter for $49.95.

Autodesk announced the immediate availability of Maya 8.5 on Monday. The new version of the 3-D rendering application is Universal Binary, allowing it to run natively on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, adds new nCloth fabric controls, supports Maya Nucleus technology and Python, takes advantage of mental ray Shaders and Workflow, supports transfer polygon attributes, and more.

Earnings reports are usually staid affairs, but Apple's financial update Wednesday could have a bit of drama. There's already excitement about how the company did during the just completed holiday season. Many are eager for Apple's take on what its new iPhone will mean for the company's earnings. However, another issue of note could spice up the proceedings. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday that it has launched a criminal investigation into Apple's past stock option grants.
