Wolfson Microelectronics saw nearly one fifth wiped off its share price Thursday following the admission it had lost key business supplier Apple. Despite the chip manufacturer's assertion that growth will absorb the impact of the loss, the news its semiconductors will not be used in the iPod nano and iPod touch players due this autumn sent its shares plunging as much as 25 percent and saw Citigroup analysts downgrade the stock from "buy" to "hold." The shares closed down 18 percent.

Even though this is has been one of the few weeks of 2008 when Apple hasn't introduced a new product, Apple-focused blog activity has hardly slowed down. Instead, it's thriving on 3G iPhone order rumors, more software developer kit talk, Karl Rove, Samsung's South Korea Anycall Haptic launch, the arrival of Photoshop Elements for Mac 6, and the notion that someday most everyone may actually hate Apple. The iPod Observer interviewed Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, who mentioned there are some 3G iPhone rumors running around Asia.

When Patrick Byers' 3 1/2-year-old starts to melt down in a public place, he is quick to defuse the time bomb with a sure fire maneuver: He slips the kid his iPod, and all is well. Both of his children, he proudly reports, are adept at using the gadget, including accessing his preapproved list of favorite videos on YouTube. Since Apple created the iPhone, it is hardly surprising that using it is easy and intuitive. Now, a few social networking sites -- most notably Twitter and Facebook -- have introduced apps specifically tailored for it.

Just as those living in shiny houses of self-righteous glass often end up surrounded by shards of their former sanctimony, so Apple now finds itself the increasingly appealing target of software hackers. For years, Apple's marketing has consisted of accentuating the positive and ignoring everything else. As hackers pillaged Microsoft's Windows operating system, Apple stressed that its computer platform was relatively virus-free, most notably in that snarky ad campaign, "I'm a PC. I'm a Mac."

With American housing and financial markets going berserk, choosing between renting and owning isn't a simple decision. Except, perhaps, when it come to music. This week's revelation that Apple is negotiating with major record labels about offering a subscription to its entire iTunes music library is the best news I've heard in ages. Details are scarce. Apple would not comment on the report, which surfaced in a British newspaper. But I don't see how this could be anything but a positive for enthusiastic music fans who want inexpensive access to more than 6 million songs.
