You won't see Broadcom on those cool iPod commercials, but the Irvine, Calif., company's chips are in some of the sleek little gadgets. Broadcom is also getting more of its chips into Apple products, even as concerns persist about its future with the computer maker. Broadcom got some attention early last year when its chips were included in the video iPod. The contract was an example of Chief Executive Scott McGregor's efforts to make Broadcom more nimble.

For decades, Apple Computer has counted on the loyalty of its customers to fuel the company's success, but in one of its most important markets there may be signs that that loyalty is flagging. According to a survey released Wednesday by ABI Research, 58 percent of iPod owners who plan to buy a new digital music player in the next 12 months said they were "somewhat likely" or "extremely likely" to buy a Zune, Microsoft's player that is expected to be released later this month.

IBM is partnering with the University of Arizona's business school on a new curriculum to put students on the leading edge of next-generation Web technology, tying entrepreneurial skills with computer savvy. The first-of-a-kind collaboration between IBM and UA's management information systems department will help students master Web 2.0 technologies, including blogs, online social networking and podcasting. Businesses are looking to newer Web technologies to enable them to connect better with customers.

Consider, for a moment, the new iPod shuffle: a matchbook-sized music playing badge that will be inexpensive -- US$79 -- and no doubt a lot of fun to own and use. With its aluminum skin and minimalist controls, it's a rugged little thing, something you'd have no fear wearing while doing something physical, like ... um ... lumberjacking, bull riding or ice climbing. As cool as this little jewel is, however, there are technologies on the way that could make the shuffle, and its larger siblings, even cooler.
