Arrogance. Overconfidence. These themes run rampant in the initial reviews of the Microsoft Zune. Of course, that's expected. What we didn't expect is that overconfidence is exactly what Microsoft wants at this point. It's the same kind of overconfidence that John Scully and Jean Louis Gasse had at Apple in 1990. Eventually, they both left Apple in quasi-disgrace when Windows 3 took off. I will grant this: Apple's executive team is a whole lot smarter than Apple was in 1990.

Apple on Tuesday announced a partnership with six major airlines to integrate the iPod with in-flight entertainment systems beginning in mid-2007. Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections that power and charge their iPods during flight, and allow the video content on their iPods to be viewed on their seat-back displays. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Few have accused Microsoft of being first to the market. Plenty have learned the hard way, however, that the company can be very good at sneaking up from behind. Apple Computer, maker of the popular iMac computers and iPod music players, on Monday named Donald J. Rosenberg as senior vice president and general counsel. Rosenberg currently holds those positions for IBM, where he has worked for more than 30 years. The move comes weeks after CEO Steve Jobs apologized to shareholders and employees after an internal probe uncovered irregularities in past stock option grants and raised "serious concerns" about two former officers.
