Sony will reportedly launch a video download service for users of its PlayStation Portable devices early next year, a move that could put it into direct competition with Apple's iPod video devices and its iTunes Movie Store. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is in negotiations with several possible content distribution partners, including Amazon.com, Movielink and CinemaNow. With the service, users could download movies to PCs and transfer them via memory sticks to their PSPs.

With buzz about Apple's rumored iPhone growing, Linksys, a unit of Cisco, on Monday announced new additions to its own iPhone product line. The company introduced a series of Web-enabled telephone handsets designed to work with Voice over Internet Protocol services. The new phone family lets users do more with their phone than talk, but for all of the compelling dual-mode technology and content partnerships, it is the fate of the "iPhone" name that seems to be drawing the most interest.

Finally, Forrester released a survey showcasing the "catastrophic" drop in iTunes sales, prompting speculation on whether Apple is, once again, on a downward spiral.

Microsoft on Tuesday released a security update, 11.3.1, for Mac Office. After many applied it, Microsoft pulled the updater on Wednesday with no notice, threw up an HTTP 404 error and later suggested in their blog that customers "uninstall" the patch. That left many outraged, wondering how to perform the uninstall process. Unfortunately, the update has no uninstall option, and the explanation from Microsoft revealed that it doesn't have a mechanism in place to back up to a previous version.
